Salt intake and hypertension.
The recommended dietary salt intake as by WHO is 5-6 g/day which will have major beneficial effect on cardiovascular health along with kidney function.
Too much salt intake increases the electrolytes in the blood , which consequently increases water retention by the kidney.
This eventually leads to increased blood pressure and hypertension, a fatal condition which if not treated leads to cardiovascular malfunction (heart failure) and death.
Some ways to reduce too much salt intake include;
- Do not add salt while cooking, these include stock cubes and granules.
- Use spices and herbs,ginger,lemon and other flavours that do not have salt.
- Bread and breakfast cereals can at times contain too much salt, checkfirst before buying.
- Do not take too much smoked foods especially meat and fish, limlit your intake.
